Dan Borton was born in Roswell and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His musical education began at home, playing in the family Dixieland band. By the time he was in high school, Dan was performing professionally in stage productions at the College of Santa Fe's Greer Garson Theater, in jazz and fusion combos, and the Rio Grande Flyway, a twenty-piece big band comprised of Santa Fe's finest musicians. Dan was an All-State musician in his junior and senior years. He traveled with the Santa Fe High School Band to Spain in 1977 to perform for King Juan Carlos.
As a music student at NMSU and UTEP, Dan played Lead Alto in the Lab Bands, and performed twice at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He recorded three albums with the Lab Bands in the 1980's.
Since then, Dan has lived and worked in Santa Fe, Las Cruces and El Paso. He has performed and recorded with the region's best players, such as Jon Gagan, Ruben Gutierrez, Billy Townes, Pancho Anguiano, Fernando Lechuga, Curt Warren, Michael Francis, Mike Middleton, Ricky Malichi, Martin Huerta and Frank Otero, among many others.
When visiting luminaries come to the area, Dan is a 'first call' sideman. He has appeared with The Temptations, The Harry James Orchestra, Linda Ronstadt, Liberace, Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, David Amram, Ed Shaughnessey, and the National Dance Institute of New Mexico.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree, and is a certified educator in Texas and New Mexico, with endorsements in Gifted and Talented Education, Technology Education, Generalist (4-8), and Music Education. He is deeply involved in education in El Paso, teaching Humanities, Social Studies and Jazz Band at Morehead Middle School, in the El Paso ISD.
